Ellen DeGeneres has certainly made her mark on Hollywood. Not only has she received 13 Emmy’s and countless other awards for her charitable donations, but she has also broken ground for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered community (LGBT). Although DeGeneres may be openly gay, this is not what defines her as a comedian, actress and television host.
She starred in two television series, Ellen and The Ellen Show from 1994-2002. Although these shows only lasted a handful of years, this is where she gained recognition world wide. In 1997, DeGeneres came out on national television on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show that she was a lesbian. In the same year, her character also cam out on her show, Ellen. Ironically enough, in her show the therapist she came out to was played by Oprah Winfrey!
Since 2004, DeGeneres has been in a relationship with Portia de Rossi. The two had been dating for four years when they decided to tie the knot. DeGeneres gave Rossi a three carat pink engagement ring when she asked her to marry her. Three carats is a great size for an engagement ring, but why did she not overdo it like so many other celebrities do when it comes time to purchase an engagement ring? If she is worth over $60 million, then why go with an affordable engagement ring instead of one that makes the front page? Maybe she decided to try and fly under the radar of the tabloids.
Her sexual orientation has already landed her on numerous tabloid covers for over a decade and some reports are not so favorable. It makes sense for her to want to be low key because their wedding ceremony was very intimate. Held at their home, the couple became legally married in 2008 regardless of some legal by laws that cast doubt on their union originally. Same-sex marriage is legal in California, so the two women were pronounced wife and wife! It should not matter what gender you are attracted to, but we live in a world that is still trying to catch up with reality. The happy couple is still married and loves in Beverly Hills with their three dogs and four cats!
This famous woman has made her way in the Hollywood regardless of the obstacles she has encountered over the years. Nothing has stopped her from being successful. Good for her and good for Hollywood!
