The 8 Essentials to Include in Your Sun Safety Kit

We spend so heavily on sunscreen and sunglasses, yet so many of us forget the littlest accessories we need to use thoroughly. We’ve furnished ourselves with personal care products to further maximize sunscreen consumption, but have yet to take advantage of them.

Sun safety kits are an incredibly underrated way to carry out a summer full of fun without over-tanning.

We’ve done the work of gathering up our essentials, so you don’t have to. Keep reading to find out how to create the ultimate kit that’ll keep your skin safe and cool all summer long.

1. Sunscreen

Sunscreen should have at least 30 SPF to give you the most protection. Even if you are not planning to be in direct sunlight for extended periods of time, it is important to wear sunscreen every day to protect your skin from damaging UVA and UVB rays.

Sunscreen should be applied before going outside and should be reapplied as needed, particularly after swimming or excessive sweating. It is also important to choose a sunscreen that is water-resistant and designed for your skin so that it can give you the best protection and coverage.

2. Sunglasses

Sunglasses are essential for sun safety, as they protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays. But even more important than lenses is sun lens technology.

Look for lenses that block at least 99% of both UVA and UVB rays and those with polarization to help reduce glare. Picking a lens that is dark enough to prevent harmful rays from entering is important, too.

Choose a frame that fits comfortably and securely on your face, and stay away from shatter-resistant lenses as they may not provide adequate protection. Wrap-around lenses are ideal as they protect all surfaces of the eye, including the sides.

Be sure to clean and store your sunglasses properly to ensure they stay effective and long-lasting!

3. Hats

A hat is essential for any sun safety kit. A wide-brim hat will protect the face, neck, nose, and ears from the sun’s rays. Make sure the hat is made from UPF fabric for the greatest protection. It should not be too loose, as it won’t protect exposed areas.

If a wide-brim hat isn’t can be done, a sun visor will help shield your face from the sun. When selecting a hat, choose dark colors if possible, as they absorb more light. Keep in mind that a hat should never be substituted with glasses or sunscreen, as they offer different coverage.

Hats should always be worn when out in the sun, regardless of the weather. The hat should be reapplied with sunscreen throughout the day, as if it gets wet or sweaty, it won’t protect you as well.

4. Lightweight Clothing

Wearing lightweight clothing is another way to learn how to prevent sun damage. Lightweight clothing is an essential item to include in your sun safety kit.

Thin, light-colored, breezy clothing made from natural materials is best for providing protection from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Aim for clothes that cover the neck, wrists, and ankles. Also, look for clothing labeled UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) to provide the extra protection your skin needs.

5. Umbrella

An umbrella is one of the most important elements in a sun safety kit. It offers protection from the sun and makes you feel comfortable while you’re outdoors.

The UV rays can be hazardous, so a good umbrella should be made of material that blocks the sun’s harsh ultraviolet rays while you’re in the sun. It should be waterproof and windproof so that you can use it outdoors in any weather or climate.

An adjustable umbrella size is also advised, ranging in size from pocket-scaled umbrellas to full beach umbrellas. Additionally, another suggestion is to buy a bright, highly visible colored umbrella to make sure that everyone can see where you are and that you are staying safe from the sun.

6. Lip Balm

Lip balm is an essential part of any sun safety kit because it provides an added layer of protection for the delicate skin on your lips. Not only does it give barrier protection from the sun’s UV rays, but most lip balms also contain hydrating ingredients, including hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, and shea butter, that not only moisturize and protect the lips but also offer some added sun protection.

When choosing a lip balm, look for broad-spectrum SPF ratings of 15 or higher, and remember to reapply every two hours if you’re out in the sun. Avoid flavored lip balms as they can attract bees and other bugs to your face.

7. Water

When it comes to water and sun safety, it’s essential to have plenty of water on hand whenever you are soaking up the sun’s rays. A reusable water bottle is recommended, as this is better for the environment, and it is also much better for your wallet in the long run. Many water bottles come with a filter, meaning you can fill them up simply with tap water and never have to worry about buying bottled water.

You can also stock up on electrolyte tablets or liquid, which will help to keep your body hydrated while also replacing lost minerals and sodium. Additionally, you can bring plenty of non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to help replenish all the fluids you’re losing on a hot summer day.

8. Insect Repellent

Insect repellent is an essential item to include in a sun safety kit as it helps to ward off pesky pests. During hot summer days, when sun protection is essential, insects can quickly become a nuisance. Having a reliable insect repellent will make all the difference in your overall sun safety experience.

Insect repellent usually contains DEET or picaridin to ensure maximum protection and should be applied liberally all over the skin and onto clothing. Additionally, a bug spray containing natural essential oils can be used in conjunction to ensure complete coverage, especially when spending extended amounts of time outdoors.
