Tying a Bow Tie – A Step-By-Step Guide

Tying a bow tie can be challenging at first, but it’s one of those practice-makes-perfect skills. In this article, we’ll walk you through a step-by-step guide to help you get it right every time.

Practical step-by-step guides can be found in various places, including videos and tutorials embedded directly into digital applications. This allows for fast, easy access to process documentation and support without having to leave the application.

Put the Tie Around Your Neck

Drape the tie around your neck so the seam is flush against your collar, and the thick end sits lower than the thin end. Cross the long end over the top of the short end, creating a loop at the back of your neck.

Fold the thin end horizontally across the front of the bow shape and your thick end — forming an X. Slide the narrow end through this loop from left to right.

Cross the Long End Over the Short End

Drape the tie around your neck with its seams facing out and the thick end on your left 1-2 inches lower than where you want it to finish. Then, cross the wide end over the thin end to make an X-shape under your chin.

Pull the long end through this horizontal loop and gently tug it on both sides to tighten and shape the bows. This step may take a few tries before you get it right.

Drape the Long End Over the Front

Drape the necktie around your collar with the seam facing outward. Place the thick end on your left side, about 4-5 inches lower than where you want the bow tie to finish. Cross the wide end underneath the thin end, forming an X.

Flip the thin end over the top of the X-shaped bow. This should leave a horizontal band across the front of your neck.

Insert the wide end through this front knot. Hold the front of the knot open with one hand.

Fold the Short End

After adjusting the bow tie so one end is longer than the other (called the long side or B), fold it back on itself so that it resembles a butterfly wing. Then, push A loop-first through the knot behind B.

This creates the front of your bow. You can see that it is asymmetrical, but that’s okay — this is what gives the bow tie its character and charm! It can take a bit of practice to get the hang of it.

Drape the Long End Over the Front

If you want your bow tie to look incredibly sharp, drape it around your neck so that the thick end is about two or three inches lower than where you’d like your finished bow to be. Next, cross the thin end diagonally in front of the thick end.

Pass the thick end across the front again horizontally, this time from right to left. Then slip a finger underneath this new horizontal band you’ve just created. Tighten and adjust the knot as needed.

Pull the Folded End Through the Loop

Bow ties come in various silhouettes, each with a slightly different vibe. For example, the butterfly and batwing styles have a more James Bond feel than the club shape.

If you’re wearing a bow tie to a wedding from a tuxedo rental in St Petersburg, you’ll want to ensure your knot is secure before entering the room. Practice how to tie a bow tie at home before you show up for the big day to ensure you look dapper.

Pull the Folded End Through the Loop

Like tying a shoelace, bow ties take practice to get right. But once you do, they’re a great way to add a touch of class to any outfit.

To start:

  1. Hang your bow tie so that one side is longer than the other.
  2. Cross the long end over the short end.
  3. Drape the long end over the front of the short end and pull it through the neck loop.
  4. Pull the folded end through the loop on both sides to tighten.

Bow ties are an elegant option for formal attire and can be worn with any dress shirt. However, the process of tying one can seem intimidating at first. Luckily, the steps below are easy to follow and will help you master this advanced necktie knot with ease.

Please start with the shorter end and cross it over the longer side, forming a loop. Then, fold the longer end back on itself and push it through the loop behind B.
