Virat Kohli To M.S. Dhoni: Captains With Defeats In IPL History

The Indian Premier League is the most popular cricket league in India, and it has been around since 2008. This year, there have been many new records set. One of them being that Captain Virat Kohli is now ranked as the captain with the most defeats in IPL history! As captain, Kohli has lost 65 matches. Is there a skipper who has suffered more losses than Kohli? Is Kohli at the top of the list of unwelcomed records? Today, we’ll take a look at the captains who have suffered the most defeats in the IPL’s history till the  Indian Premier League 2021.

  1. M.S. Dhoni(79)

M.S. Dhoni, the captain with the most victories in the IPL’s history, also has a higher record in defeats. The fact that he has captained in 195 matches, the most in the league’s history, is the main reason for his position at the top. Even though he is at the top of this unwelcome list, Chennai Super Kings has been the most consistent team, qualifying for the second round in 10 of the last 11 seasons. Dhoni has never had the highest winning percentage in IPL.

  • Virat Kohli(65)

Kohli, like Dhoni, is one of the most disappointing captains in IPL history; with 65 losses in 132 matches, he has led RCB as captain. In the following two seasons, he was projected to surpass Dhoni. Virat is one of just two captains who has lost more matches than he has won. RCB has only made one final under Kohli and has struggled from 2017 to 2019. They advanced to the second round of the IPL 2020 but were eliminated in the Eliminator after losing to Sunrisers Hyderabad. Despite his disappointing performance, RCB management is unlikely to make a leadership move.

  • Gautam Gambhir(57)

Gautam Gambhir, the former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Delhi Capitals (D.C.) captain, has 57 losses from 129 games. Gambhir had little success at D.C., losing 12 of his 25 appearances as captain. With KKR, he enjoyed a remarkable run, leading them to IPL titles in 2012 and 2014. KKR qualified for the second round of the IPL 2017 under his leadership; however, he was sacked ahead of the mega-auction for the IPL 2018.

  • Rohit Sharma(47)

Rohit became the captain of Mumbai Indians in the year 2018. He is one of Mumbai’s most successful captains, with 47 wins to his name at a win percentage of 68%. However, Rohit led Mumbai for only two seasons and managed just three victories when he took over from Ricky Ponting as captain on October 29th, 2018. Rohit Sharma’s stint was cut short by injury, which ruled him out until the 2019 IPL season started.

Rohit Sharma, the most successful IPL skipper with five titles, is also on this list with 47 losses in 123 games. As a captain, Rohit has 72 victories, the most in IPL history.

  • Adam Gilchrist(39)

Adam Gilchrist is the captain with the most defeats in IPL history. He has captained Kings XI Punjab for three years and led them to four semifinal appearances, but he also lost more games than any other captain. Even though Adam Gilchrist led the Deccan Chargers to the IPL title, he hasn’t been a successful captain with Kings XI, with his 39 defeats being highlighted more than his victories.

The Bottom Line

With the Indian Premier League 2021 schedule right around the corner, we’ll be looking at some of the captains who have suffered the most defeats in IPL history.

One of the captains who has lost more matches than anyone else in IPL history is M.S. Dhoni. He’s led his team to victory on just thirteen occasions and has lost 79 times as captain- an overall win percentage of 18%.
