As 2020 drew to a close you can only hope that 2021 greatly improves. Whilst many countries around the world have started it in yet another lockdown, fingers are crossed at returning to some sort of normality in the not too distant future. Following the major disruptions and delays which were seen in 2020, sports events throughout the globe were postponed or held behind closed doors. As a result, bookies really have suffered. This means one thing for us punters – promotions and deals for a vast betting market. Grand National
Horse racing managed, perhaps better than other sports, to soldier on during the lockdowns and restrictions of 2020. This did not stop some disruptions, perhaps most notably that of the Grand National. Due to timing the National suffered a complete cancellation which led to the race being substituted for a Virtual Grand National. This virtual version of the race has actually been run since 2017 but it fully eclipsed the real-life national in 2020. And whilst the virtual race was exciting and fun, it doesn’t even touch the edge of what the real Grand National offers punters, bookies and general horse racing fans alike. The 2021 race will hopefully return to normality, and reality, with Tiger Roll looking to bag itself a third consecutive win at the Grand National and put its name into the history books alongside the famous Red Rum. Every year, the National tends to be one of horse racing’s biggest betting days but after a year out you can only imagine that it is going to be multiplied even more than normal for the return of the race in 2021. Euro Championship
It is probably the second biggest international football competition to the World Cup and sees all the European giants compete against each other for the coveted trophy. Following its postponement in 2020, the Euros are set to take place in the summer of 2021 around Europe. It is not confirmed that this will definitely still take place, and I wouldn’t be surprised if FIFA looked at moving it all to just one country instead. Regardless, this competition which runs for weeks in the summer offers some great betting potential for all footie fans. The group stage moving into the knockouts offers fans a real opportunity to grab themselves loads of winning bets from large accumulator coupons to singles. Royal Ascot
The famous Stradivarius is looking to pick up the Gold Cup for the 4th time at the 2021 Ascot event and would put its name down in horse racing history as only the second horse ever to do this. Royal Ascot is poised to be a real good show regardless of the winner. Following last year’s really deflated race with empty stands and distinct lack of atmosphere it would be nice to see fans return to the racetrack. After all, the Royal Ascot usually draws in thousands of punters looking to bash the bookies and win big. Nevertheless, if the race does go ahead without fans it is sure to be betting bonanza. Huge bookie promotions and some races poised to be memorable, this event is going to be huge in 2021, let’s just hope that at least some fans are back in the concourse to cheer the horses to the finish line.
Australian Open Having dealt with the virus considerably well, Australia has managed to curb the pandemic and resume normal life. This has allowed major sporting events to go ahead and even host them with some fans! It means that the first major tennis event of the year, the Australian Open is sure to be a cracker. With some fans allowed in the courts, there is a real hype around the beginning of major tennis with this event. I’m sure the big guns will start the year off right but don’t be surprised if some young competitors throw some spanners in the works. The Australian Open has been known to have some giant killing moments, which as fans, makes it so exciting and wets the whistle for the upcoming Wimbledon and French Open events later in the year.
